The article “Life under the specter of war: Images from Ukraine” (New York Times, February 9, 2022) presents a series of consequences of the crisis initiated by President Vladimir Putin. He has transferred more than 100,000 soldiers and necessary war equipment to Ukraine's border and threatens to invade the country.
The crisis involves Russia, Ukraine, the European Union and the United States and their respective armies, notably NATO.
Putin's main goals may be:
– Strengthen its leadership among Russian's citizens;
– Force Americans and Europeans to withdraw NATO troops stationed on Russian's borders;
– Force Ukraine to renounce membership of NATO and the EU.
Will he succeed? Perhaps because of the weakness of President Biden and European leaders.
What's the solution? Nobody knows. Let's try to predict the kind of effective pressure against Putin!
“War is the continuation of politics by other means!” (Carl Von Clausewitz). Diplomacy too? Chamberlain or Churchill? And Biden?
Chamberlain tried to dialogue with Adolf. Are some European leaders trying to do the same with the Russians? It's reasonable? Are dictators any different these days? Is it possible to bring the guy to his knees?
“It's the economy, stupid!” (James Carville)! Perhaps, it is the only solution, before the conflict.
